What are the risks? Will I be able to have my own child after egg donation?
In general, risks can be classified as short and long-term. Short-term risks are directly related to stimulation and egg retrieval. They are extremely low, but hyperstimulation syndrome and complications during retrieval are possible. Hyperstimulation syndrome is an exaggerated response to the selected dose of stimulation injections. It manifests as pain in the lower abdomen of varying intensity. It always disappears completely with the onset of the next menstrual cycle after donation, which usually comes within 10 days. It must be said that complications following egg retrieval that require subsequent surgery are very rare – about one case per 3,000-3,500 procedures. Your fertility will not be affected even in cases requiring surgical treatment for bleeding. Long-term health risks or negative effects on the later ability to conceive and deliver a healthy baby have not been confirmed anywhere in the world.
