Egg Donation in Europe? Every Country Has Its Own Rules

27.5.2025 · 2 min reading

Did you know that egg donation laws vary across Europe—and that becoming a parent isn’t equally accessible everywhere?
In some countries, the path is clear and open. In others, it's a dead end—or a maze of legal obstacles with limited options. And when you're planning to start a family, you want clarity, not confusion.

Did you know that egg donation laws vary across Europe—and that becoming a parent isn’t equally accessible everywhere?

In some countries, the path is clear and open. In others, it’s a dead end—or a maze of legal obstacles with limited options. And when you’re planning to start a family, you want clarity, not confusion.

That’s why more and more couples are choosing to travel abroad for treatment—to places where the pathway is clear, the care is high-quality, and the approach is compassionate.

Germany and Switzerland

In Germany, egg donation is prohibited under the Embryo Protection Act (Embryonenschutzgesetz). While discussions about reform are ongoing, the reality remains unchanged—those in need of donor eggs must seek care outside the country.

In Switzerland, legal reforms are slowly emerging, but current legislation remains strict. The result is similar to Germany—many couples look for solutions abroad.

Austria

Austria allows egg donation, but with strict limitations—such as age restrictions for both donors and recipients, as well as a cap on the number of treatment cycles. While the system functions, not everyone finds its pace or rules suitable.

And then there’s the Czech Republic

Egg donation is fully legal here and tightly regulated by state authorities.
The Czech Republic is one of the most sought-after destinations for infertility treatment. Our country has earned an outstanding reputation for combining top-tier medical expertise with accessibility, empathy, and fair conditions.

Real Stories. Real Hope.

L. and B. remember desperately scouring the internet, searching for a clinic that could finally offer a sense of hope.
They found it—at our clinic in Prague.

“The entire team was so friendly, warm, and professional. The care was truly personal and human. At every step, we felt seen—not just like another number in line. When we took a pregnancy test 14 days after the transfer and saw two lines, we couldn’t believe it. Today, we’re the proud parents of twins, and we’re grateful every single day.”

You can read their story—and more patient experiences—on our Reviews & Testimonials page.

When You Need More Than Just Medical Treatment
